Whilst Red Grouse are plentiful in the Scottish Highlands, finding and photographing them easily can still be a challenge. Indeed this is probably the best place to photograph Red Grouse from the car with a range of habitats and lighting options available throughout the year.
What you need to know:
Site and photography guide
Lochindorb, near Grantown on Spey, represents one of the best places in Scotland to photograph Red Grouse from the car. Here's what you need to know.
As you are shooting from the vehicle a bean bag is essential. Red Grouse can sometimes be right next to the road so a zoom telephoto of 100-400 is ideal. A 500mm would give some portrait shots and more environmental images of Red Grouse further away.
Please note this road is NOT gritted in winter and with lying snow should only by attempted in a 4x4 vehicle if at all.
The best locations for photography
Lochindorb is great for photographing Red Grouse for a number of reasons. Firstly the Red Grouse are often near the vehicle, especially in the morning when they come to take grit from the road. It is often best to arrive shortly after first light. The entire stretch of the road from the Grantown turn off, passed the loch, to the bridge and beyond to the final sharp left are all productive. However, the best results nearly always come from the western end of the loch from the metal bridge for about 400 metres. This area provides a variety of different habitats e.g. heather and golden grass, as well as various shooting positions, different lighting situations and of course some very confiding grouse.Photography Map:
